My Christmas review (though a bit late) is dedicated to a non-BL, baseball manga which has just claimed the 2006 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award. I’m usually not into sports manga because most of the time, they just focus on techniques and competition and before long, they enter the endless loop that lead to nowhere but boredom. Ookikufuri Kabutte (abb. as Oofuri) is different because its focus is not on techniques so much as the psychological conditions within the players and also between the players.

After listening to this drama CD, I must put Shuudou Rena sensei on my “landmine” list because quite a good portion of her work is neither “real love”, “real plot”, nor “real speed”. Ironically, she may reflect the true values of “yaoi”, a.k.a. (yamanashi, ochinashi, iminashi).
It’s a mystery as to why her works keep getting dramatized. My humble guess is that she may not be good at writing, but she must be excellent at PR. I apologize if you are a Shuudou Rena fan, in fact, I recommend you leave this post (and probably site) immediately because you won’t be happy with my review of her work.

Usually I review book by book but since the Cold Series is actually one big story split into three parts, I decide to review all three books together. Since Digital Manga Publishing released an English version for Cold Sleep, I will not go into details for Sleep and concentrate more on Light & Fever. As usual, my summary is filled with SPOILERS so if you decide to wait for DMP to publish the rest of the series, then please do not read any further.
Please note that aside from the main story, there is also a side story with Kurokawa and Taniguchi. There are several parts to that story (Boku no suki na hito – recorded in Sleep, New Year Snow Light in Light, and an extra doujinshi titled “COLD…”. I won’t review that couple because they’re not related to this main plot (they’re interlinked because of the advertisement “Love & Hate” in Fever.

This is the book I like THE BEST among all the Boy’s love books I have read (manga and novels) so I intend to write a VERY DETAILED review of the story. If you plan to read the novel, I don’t recommend reading my summary/review as that will inevitably spoil the fun. Deadlock is definitely a deviant from the genre of boy’s love because unlike usual boy’s love that mimic a heterosexual relationship, this one is more down to earth a description of the love between a man and another man and that’s the part that I like THE BEST.
Since all the names are in katakana, I just use the nearest English name because it’s strange to write up an English review with katakana
. If you find problems with the names, please inform me. This story is totally fiction and so don’t imagine the prison in the States is like this. It is certainly NOT!

This novel opened with “My sweet honey” and I almost fell off the chair from laughing.
Normally, it’s not surprising if you hear a man saying this to a woman but when it’s a guy saying that to another guy, especially someone nearly a decade older, it’s REALLY. As usual, my summaries contain heavy spoilers and so from now on I’ll provide a quick summary for those who’re just browsing for what to buy and the full summary for those who want to use the reviews for understanding the plot in BLCDs or raw manga.

This manga was first published in 2001 but it’s going to be dramatized by Intercommunications next February!! I intended to only write a short review for this manga initially but I changed my mind and write a detailed review to celebrate the coming of the BLCD (which will only cover Sango & Nekoyanagi’s story). This is known as the iromachi (similar to modern day red light district) because the story took place in a fantasy setting that resembled the ancient red-light district of Japan. The whole district is isolated from the rest of the world and the prostitutes working there are not allowed to leave without permit. Many children were sold to become prostitutes to pay off their family debts and in this series, we get to see the life of a few of these prostitutes.
!!SHOTA WARNING !!
The ages of the couple vary but most of the uke are YOUNG. Sango is around 13-14 at the beginning of the story so it’s okay (13 is the age of consent in Japan I think but it’s about to change I’ve heard). Momiji looks around 6-7 to me and Asagi looks around 9-10 for me.
